Indoor e-cig Ban Snuffed Out of NY Budget
Last month, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state lawmakers were poised to include electronic cigarettes in the state's ban on smoking in restaurants, workplaces and other public, indoor spaces.
Then they didn't.
The e-cigarette measure was stripped from the state's $153 billion budget before lawmakers approved it over the weekend, as was a 10-cents-per-milliliter tax on vapor products that Cuomo had proposed.
The move came after Cuomo, the Republican-led Senate and Democrat-led Assembly had all publicly backed including the expanded ban in the budget, with the Legislature reiterating its support less than two weeks ago.
The omission from the final budget enraged the American Cancer Society's lobbying arm, which had been pushing for the measures as a way to discourage e-cigarette use.
